Reflexology

Health Sanctum

Reflexology is not merely another form of massage. It is a holistic non-invasive science, based on the principle that reflexes, or areas in the feet, hands, ears and other parts of the body relate to structures, such as the spine and shoulders, as well as internal organs of the body, such as the liver and kidneys.

For thousands of years, different ancient civilisations have worked with the hands and feet to promote a sense of wellness by palpating or applying pressure to reflex points or zones of the body. Hence, reflexology may also be referred to as zone therapy, as there are 10 zones that run through the body from head to toe. Modern reflexology is based on the principle that by palpating or applying pressure to these reflex points and zones, the treatment will help to bring about a balanced state in the body by stimulating the healing process, and in turn normalising the function of internal organs.

Some of the many benefits of reflexology include:

  • Inducing a state of deep relaxation, which in turn has a profound healing effect on the body
  • Balances the nervous system
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Improves blood flow throughout the body, which again helps with the healing process
  • Boosts lymphatic function
  • Improved elimination of toxins from the body due to improved blood flow
  • Stimulates energy flow through the body
  • Stimulates the central nervous system as we have thousands of nerve endings on the feet

What to expect on your first treatment

As a qualified reflexologist (Professional Certificate in Clinical Reflexology) and a member of the Reflexology Association of Australia, I will be taking a detailed health history to help me understand any past or current health issues. This will help to determine the treatment process, whether it’s for a specific illness or injury, or whether you would just like to unwind and relax. While I do this I will often pop your feet into a relaxing footbath, so all you will need to remove will be your socks. It is advisable not to wear tight fitting or long trousers, or at least be able to roll them up above your knee, as sometimes some lower legwork maybe required.

Once I have taken your health history, and inspected your feet, I will invite you to lie back on my massage table, get comfortable and enjoy a relaxing treatment designed especially for you. This may also include ears and hands if that’s your preference.

Depending on your health status, several treatments may be recommended, with usually 4-5 sessions required to bring about a response to a health issue. Regular reflexology treatments are beneficial in maintaining this new sense of balance and wellbeing. Alternatively just a one off, indulgent relaxation treatment is never a waste of time.

As I also hold an Advanced Diploma in Nutritional Medicine (and a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society) you may also like to combine your reflexology treatment with a nutritional consultation to bring about a real change in your health status. Refer to Services for treatment plans and prices or call me to discuss your needs.
